Fragility and Society at Humboldt University Berlin

The title of Eve Parnell’s exhibition ‘Vernehmt und lasst mich traum so wahrheit singen – Let me sing dreams as words of truth’ is taken from a poem written in 1923 by Claus Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg, one of the leading members of the 20 July 1944 assassination plot on Adolf Hitler. Interested in the Arts, von Stauffenberg’s upbringing imbued in him, from an early age, a sense of duty towards society as a whole. Irish artist Eve Parnell explores this sense of duty through the Artist lens; recognising the role of the Artist in society and how the ability to view the extraordinary in the ordinary can inspire responsible change.

Eve Parnell is a highly accomplished draughtswoman whose work features in the collections of: HRH The Prince of Wales; the Pontifical Council for Culture in the Vatican; and onboard a Maltese Armed Forces Ship currently on humanitarian duties in the Mediterranean. She has exhibited in Ireland, the United Kingdom, Germany, Finland and Italy. Working in the delicate and demanding medium of pencil on tissue paper, she draws from the North European tradition of realism rooted in Netherlandish art from the fifteenth to the seventeenth centuries. Her work requires the viewer to look closely and be challenged, by bringing together technical dexterity with the fragility of ethereal themes such as life and the environment.

Parnell studied painting at the National College of Art and Design, Dublin, leading to a BA degree in Fine Art in 2002. Her work has been exhibited in unusual and exceptional spaces, such as the Parliamentary Buildings, Stormont, Belfast; Embassy of Ireland in Berlin, Germany; the National Maritime Museum, Turku, Finland; and The Pontifical Irish College, Rome, Italy. A special presentation of one of her drawings to HRH The Prince of Wales took place at Saint Patrick’s Church, Donegall Street, Belfast in May 2015.

The exhibition runs from 31 January until 26 February  2017, at Humboldt University, Berlin. The exhibition will be opened on 31st January at 18:00, by H.E. Ambassador of Ireland to Germany, Michael Collins.

1916 : Oxford Historian discusses an Irish rising that brought independence from Britain

Professor Roy Foster from Oxford is speaking on the Irish Exit from the British Empire, in particular the event of the Easter rising 1916. This is where the proclamation of independence declaring Ireland a republic was first read, significantly in the central post office in Dublin. It is told that Gandhi carried the Irish principles of independence around with him until his death which inspired him in fulfilling his mission in India.

The significance of this event is very relevant to our lives today.

Those interested in history, politics, humanitarian issues are welcome to take the chance to ask questions and get responses from Professor Roy Foster on how history is written and remembered.
